The Abraham Kriel Bambanani Journey

our journey 1

We do not step in for a moment. We walk the full journey.

South Africa’s children remain among the most socio-economically vulnerable groups in society. Many children and youth face poverty, inequality, abuse, neglect, family breakdown, limited access to social services and youth unemployment

Without intervention, these children and youth are at high risk of poor educational outcomes, long-term trauma, unemployment, social exclusion and intergenerational cycles of poverty — outcomes that can persist across generations without effective intervention.

Without Intervention Cycles Repeat

Too many young lives are affected by circumstances they did not choose. Poverty, trauma, instability and limited support can shape a child’s future if no one steps in with care, guidance and opportunity.

At Abraham Kriel Bambanani, intervention is about more than immediate help. It is about creating safe, stable and nurturing environments where children and youth can begin to heal, grow and build futures they can stand on.

Children growing up in safe, stable and nurturing environments

Increased family reunification and reduced institutionalisation

Breaking the cycle of poverty, trauma and neglect

Young adults becoming independent, economically active members of society

We Don’t Step In for a Moment. We Walk the Full Journey.

At Abraham Kriel Bambanani, the goal is not only to help children and youth cope. The goal is to help them thrive. Every programme forms part of a connected journey that moves young lives from vulnerability toward safety, healing, dignity, belonging and independence.

This is not just a programme. It is a life rebuilt.

Beyond Abraham Kriel Bambanani

Ongoing support as young people step into life on their own.

Because real change doesn’t happen overnight. It happens over time.

No matter where a young person enters our system — residential care, community support, education or skills development — the goal remains the same: to help them build a future they can stand on.

Child and Youth Care Centres

This is where Healing begins

For children placed with us by the Children’s Court, our residential homes in different areas of Johannesburg offer more than just a bed — they provide a second chance. Abraham Kriel Bambanani provides substitute family care where 180 young lives move from trauma and uncertainty toward safety, stability and belonging.

This family care is provided at the Langlaagte Campus, Maria Kloppers Campus and Satellite Homes. Together, these homes support children through trauma-informed care, schooling, therapy and life skills.

Key Points:

More than a service — a connected system of support
Restoring dignity and rebuilding identity
Providing structure and emotional support for the future

Community Care

Care that Restores

In Soweto and Westbury, Abraham Kriel Bambanani’s community care programmes serve as anchors of hope for vulnerable children, youth and families facing poverty, trauma, gang violence, substance abuse, physical and sexual abuse, and the impacts of HIV/AIDS.

Through the Soweto Drop-In Centre and Westbury Home-Based Care, AKB delivers prevention and early intervention services to children and families in these communities. The programme provides nutritious meals, educational support, school assistance, psychosocial counselling, basic material aid, skills for self-reliance and a sense of belonging rooted in dignity and family preservation

Growth and Discovery

At Johanna Malan ECDC, AKB creates a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment where young children aged 2½ to 6 years from Yeoville and surrounding impoverished Johannesburg communities can learn, grow and thrive during their most important developmental years.

Through quality early learning, nutritious meals, structured play and holistic care, the centre supports each child’s social, emotional, physical and cognitive development. This is more than early learning — it is part of rebuilding futures rooted in hope, confidence and belonging.
